I finally found the time to update the Moodle Math Question Generator at ASchool.us today. Now it uses less of the Algebra Notation. This should enhance compatibility and reduce the load on the Moodle server. Also if you don't want to mess with the script you can head over to teacherpayteachers and download a set of pre-made moodle questions. It contains addition, multiplication, division with integer answers, subtraction without negative answers, subtraction with negative answers, square roots with integer answers, and exponents.

Flash Based Random Student Selector

To use this flash application simply enter a list of your students names or items that you want to randomly select, one per line. Then click the next button to let the computer start picking names.

Once a name has been picked it may be picked again but is less likely. This will keep students on their toes and help them pay attention while at the same time give everyone in the class a chance to participate.

Gimp: Moving Mirrors and Layer Duplication

Objectives:

Layer duplication
Move layers
Mirror layers

Directions:

Shortcuts are in parentheses.

Download MovingLayers-start.xcf
Select the Move tool (M).
To make things easier select the Move the Active Layer option.
Open the layers dialog box (CTL-L).
Move Select the Top Left layer and in the image move the layer by clicking and holding the left mouse button, anywhere in the image, and moving the layer to the desired position.
Do the same with the Top Right layer
In the layers dialog box duplicate the Vertical Mirror and Horizontal Mirror layers by selecting them and clicking the duplicate layer button
Select the Flip Tool and select Horizontal as the flip type in the tool options. Make sure that the Horizontal Mirror #1 layer is selected and click anywhere in the image.
Notice that when the layer is mirrored it is rasterized meaning that you can no longer change the text.
Select the Flip Tool and select Vertical as the flip type in the tool options. Make sure that the Vertical Mirror #1 layer is selected and click anywhere in the image.
To rotate the 45 degree layer. Select the layer and then select the rotation tool (Shirt-R). Click anywhere on the image and the rotation dialog will pop up. Adjust the angle to 45 and press enter.

Making Gimp faster.

While I was creating a presentation today and using Gimp to crop my screen shots is seemed really slow when I was pasting in the images. So I adventured into the preferences and discovered that there was an option to increase the number of processors. I haven't done any test yet but this should at least help some of the filters work faster.

It's been a while since I've posted here. Mostly because life has been really busy. I've been working on a couple of new projects in my spare time that doesn't exist. One of them is Worksheet Share a new website where teachers can post and share their worksheets with each other and earn a little compensation for their work. A great new external harddrive.

I just purchased a great external hard drive enclosure and SATA 3.0 drive and love it. The case is a Rosewill RX-358-S it has a 80mm fan and both USB 2.0 and eSATA. The fan is really quite and keeps the 500GB Seagate drive nice and cool. I had a previous IDE enclosure made by Ultra and was less than impress with its quality and performance. It was always disappearing and didn't seem to have all that great of performance. The new drive even seems to perform well on my old USB 1.0 system. The case seems to be a nice solid construction. The only thing that is different about it is the way that the had drive connect to the board in the computer but it doesn't seem to be a problem. I got the silver case but it is also available in black from newegg.com

Random Student Selector

Random Student Selector

I my Algebra I class the other day I was using the Quizdom pick option to select my students to answer questions, during the class period 2 of my 11 students were selected 3 times while 2 others were not selected at all. Out of about 10 questions this wasn't very even percentages. One of the students Nathan J., who is also one of my computer programming students, and I were discussion this. We came up with a way to decrease the likelihood that someone would be selected once they have been selected. We chose this because if you eliminate the student until all have been selected the student will then mentally check out. With our solution the student can still be selected but the likelihood of them being selected twice in a row is reduced. Given enough time the Quizdom solution would be fine but if you are only asking 10 questions it is important that the student selection should be random and balanced. Here are my directions on how to create a star scape like the image below.

You should be able to follow the directions below in any version of Gimp or Photoshop. The directions below are given specifically for Gimp but they will also work in Photoshop.

Create a new blank white image 640x480 pixelsBlack backgroundgr
Make sure that Image -> Mode -> RGB is selected
Select Filter -> Noise -> Hurl... Hurl seemed to be the best option that I had. I should give you a variation of colors all over the image.
